Many lens options are now available at time of cataract surgery. The standard lens corrects vision at distance or near but not both. If significant astigmatism is present, relaxing incisions may be made or toric lenses may be implanted, reducing the need for distance vision spectacle correction and providing clearer vision. Multifocal lenses are implantable and reduce spectacle dependency for both near and distant vision. Each eye is different and require approaches specific to the needs of the patient. Several companies produce lenses and each has it's strengths and weaknesses. All multifocals perform suboptimally if astigmatism or macular disease is present. Astigmatic management with or without Toric lenses and multifocal lenses are not covered by insurance and patients are under no pressure to purchase them.
